| FAQ |
| Q) How does it work? |
|
A) The Kat Trakker uses a GPS Travel Logger called an I-gotu. The device is designed for backpackers and photographers to record their position while out trekking or taking photos, You can sync a digital camera to the logger and create a visual map of where you have been. Once you have finished your journey you simply connect the logger to your PC and download the data into a program called @trip and it will import all your stored locations into Google Earth.* The way we use it though is much more interesting, The Kat Trakker, as we call it, is attached to your cats collar. You can set the Trakker to record the cats GPS location via satellite at various timed intervals, 5 secs, 30 secs, 1 min, and so on. leave the cat out for the day or overnight and when it comes home remove the collar and connect the Trakker to the PC and see where it's been all that time! You can attach the Trakker to the collar in one of two ways, either let it dangle from a hoop on the collar or attach it to a harness so that it can ride on the small of your cats back, This method produces slightly better results as the device is always pointing skyward so locks position quicker than the Dangle method. Although The dangle method is still pretty good. |
| Q) Can I use this item to track my cat in real time? |
|
A) No, unfortunately Live GPS tracking devices have not yet reached the technical miniaturization required to permit a cat to carry a device comfortably. The Kat Trakker records GPS positions and are only available for viewing after the device has been removed and the data uploaded to a PC
The smallest GPS device available that can actively track an Item or animal is currently used on our Dog Trakker. Rest assured that as the devices become smaller we will be upgrading the Kat Trakker. |

| Q) Is the device tough enough for the cat to wear all the time outside? |
|
A) In general yes, It is housed in a rubber shell that protects against the usual bumps and water splashes etc. We have not heard of a weather related problem yet but if your cat is prone to the occasional swim we would recommend removing the Trakker first!
Also worth mentioning, that after you have tracked your cat a couple of dozen times, you will have a very good idea of its territory and so you could remove the tracker for a while. |
| Q) Can my cat be hurt wearing the Kat Trakker? |
|
A) Well firstly there are two ways to mount the collar, Your cat can either have it dangling on a small hoop link by the collar or it can wear it on the small of its back on a harness. If the collar has a safety release then it should release in the event of your cat getting caught up. In the case of the harness, as long as the harness is not too loose as to allow things to snag on it, it should be fine. Please note that Kat Trakker can not be held responsible for any misadventure that may befall your cat whilst wearing the Kat-Trakker device, Please be sensible about how you attach the Kat-Trakker device. |
| Q) Can I use the Trakker to log a persons or cars route etc? |
|
A) Ah, the most frequently asked question, in a nutshell yes! The i-gotu device itself was designed with people in mind, for logging their position while taking photos etc. You can place the Trakker on any object and as long as that object has a relatively clear view of the sky it will track it. Uses we have heard of are as follows but for sure there are many more uses, 1, Placed in a spouses coat lining, 2) Placed with a cable strap or magnet under a car or just left lying on the rear dash. 3) Attached to a Dog 4) Bicycle 5) Placed in a pocket to show a jogger his route. A note on personal tracking, in some countries, it is illegal to track someone without their knowledge, so please be aware you may be opening yourself up to prosecution if you use the Kat Trakker in this way, Also be prepared to find out things that maybe you really don't want to know!! |
| Q) What do I do if the device doesn't work on receipt? |
|
A) Please be aware that the Kat Trakker is provided by us but not built by us, you need to refer to the documentation supplied with the software and on the Kat Trakker support page. If the device is completely dead after attempting all the support suggestions you can return it and if it is found to be faulty a refund will be offered. Please contact Kat Trakker first before returning the Trakker so that we can attempt to resolve the issue first. |
| Q) Do I need a high tech Computer to run the software, is it complicated to set up? |
|
A) No , as long as you have a windows computer with a USB port then you should be fine. To view the tracking logs you will need an internet connection though. When you connect the Trakker to your laptop then the route software will call on Google Maps/Earth so you will need to be connected at that stage. You can download the data first and then disconnect the Trakker from the computer and then connect to the internet afterwards if need be to load the map. (if only one USB port etc) |
| *A note on Google maps, It is advised that you have a look at Google earth maps first before buying the Kat Trakker as the route maps displayed will only be as good as the coverage of your tracking area by Google earth. |
